The Territory Government is working towards a cleaner, greener Territory and has implemented several key initiatives for greening the Territory.

The Government's $34 million Northern Territory Climate Change Policy is a comprehensive action plan to combat climate change and ensure the Territory economy is strategically placed as a green resource base into the future.

To further protect our natural environment and sustain the habitats of our native wildlife, the Territory Government is embarking on a nationally and globally significant conservation effort Territory Eco-link.

This is hailed as conservation for the 21st century and has placed our region on the road to a more healthy ecological future.

The Territory Government has also committed to an exciting new Cash for Containers scheme, an initiative for 2011.

The aim of the scheme is to reduce beverage container litter, increase recycling and contribute to a 50 per cent reduction in waste going to landfill in the Territory.

It will do this by placing a deposit of 10c on each drink container, which can be redeemed by returning empty containers to collection depots in the major centres, and collection points in regional and remote locations, across the Territory.

Government has also announced further action to make our environment cleaner by banning the supply of lightweight, single-use plastic shopping bags.

New legislation to "ban the bag'' will be introduced in 2010 and roll-out in 2011.

Territorians are encouraged to use re-usable, environmentally friendly bags when they go shopping.

Territory Government household rebates are on offer to Territorians to help save money, save water, save power and help the environment. Rebates available Territory-wide include the NT Rainwater Tank Rebate and Energy Smart Rebate.

The NT Waterwise Central Australia Rebate Scheme is available to residents in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek only.
