Nationwide News Northern Territory publishes the daily Northern Territory News and The Sunday Territorian, along with the Darwin Sun and Palmerston Sun free weekly newspapers. The newspapers and their associated printing facilities had a carbon footprint of 1,527 tonnes in the year to June 2007.
Temperature control is a major energy use in the Northern Territory. Awnings have been installed over windows as well as a rapid roll door to keep cooled air in the high traffic press room. Reflective coating for the roof, window tinting, ceiling fans, air conditioning curtains, increased insulation and new chiller units are also being investigated as new initiatives to reduce energy consumption. A suitable time for an energy audit of the major NT News sites is currently being investigated.
The use of hybrid, diesel and gas fuelled cars and forklifts is also being explored, as is a solar hot water installation.
At the administration sites, waste paper recycling has reduced garbage collection from six to three days per week, and simple practical solutions such as timers on water urns save hot water heating for tea and coffee for an unnecessary thirteen hours per day.
