Davies Brothers publishes Tasmania’s largest circulating newspaper - The Mercury, along with the Saturday Mercury and The Sunday Tasmanian.
Davies Brothers has a number of measures in place to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. All air-conditioning is time-managed and 90% of the company’s computer monitors have been switched over to the more efficient LCD versions. Staff awareness campaigns are being introduced to save energy in the workplace, and the IT department is investigating the use of wake on LAN technology to further enhance energy efficiency.
Plans for a new press site are being revised to ensure they meet appropriate energy efficiency standards.
Along with these initiatives, 2008 will see the beginnings of a program to replace fleet vehicles with lower emission choices. This will be coupled with the design and display of ‘smoother driving’ posters to encourage efficient and safe driving techniques by staff.
Car-pooling, community work-to-walk days and a major community recycling campaign are also being planned, as is an online reader’s survey and an environmental awareness competition with Tasmanian schools.
