In 2012 a 1 Degree Schools Newspaper Sculpture Competition was held by News Corp Australia in NSW. Primary and secondary students across Sydney sety in a design concept and then five finalists are selected to bring their design to life using, primarily, newspapers and other recycled materials. The finalists sculptures were featured in the foyer of the News Corp Australia Head Office in Sydney and employees voted for their favourite sculpture. The winning school was given an excursion to News’ Sydney Print Centre. Sydney student Tuong Trong Vo (pictured below) won the high school category for his first major artwork – a giant Alexander McQueen shoe made from recycled News Limited newspapers.

The other finalists were an ironman, a marine tank, an Olympian and a box creation. The competition was a great way of helping News in NSW build strong relationships with primary and secondary schools, and  a fantastic opportunity for students of all ages to be creative and engage with newspapers.
