The year 2017 marked 10 years of the Global Environmental Initiative (GEI), News Corp’s long term commitment to the environment. To celebrate, the GEI prepared a special infographic highlighting its achievements from the decade (2007 – 2017), as well as its continued goals for the future.
The anniversary also coincides with the announcement that News Corp achieved its goal of reaching zero waste at all of its owned print centres globally.
Zero waste is defined by the Zero Waste International Alliance as diverting more than 90% of solid wastes from landfills. The waste hierarchy of “Reduce, Reuse & Recycle” is applied at every stage of our operations to minimize all types of waste, including general waste, production waste such as newsprint/newspaper, packaging, aluminium press plates, oils, chemicals, batteries, electronic waste, plus regulated air emissions and wastewater.
“This is a great achievement by our worldwide print centres so congratulations to all our employees who make the effort each day to reach Zero Waste!” said Paul Jakubski, VP of EHS and Sustainability.
Dr. Tony Wilkins, Head of Environment at News Corp Australia, said “Our Zero Waste goal has led to us looking much more closely at the value in the things we would normally dispose of and its led to our Sydney Print Centre winning the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association Environment award for Environment because of their achievements in getting to and maintaining a rate of 98% diversion from landfill. As the Print Centres have shown with a bit of thought almost all the things we discard can be given a second life and be a part of the circular economy.”
