Action

Actions speak louder than words. They also make good business sense when it comes to using our resources more efficiently. That’s why we are getting our own house in order by reducing our emissions, waste and water consumption and investing in clean energy.

1 Degree is all about action. The small changes we can all make every day add up to a big difference. The reduction of News Limited’s energy use by over 10% from FY2006 to FY2011 has come from the thousands of individual changes made across the business by thousands of different people.

Action

Between now and 2015 we will:

• Continue reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to reach 15% through efficiency measures on our FY2006 baseline by end of FY2015
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 15% from our FY2006 baseline
• Identify more energy efficiency opportunities
• Further integrate energy efficiency with business strategy
• Continue to compile divisional energy and greenhouse gas emission data and report as required
• Develop and implement criteria for waste reporting
• Develop and implement a strategy for water efficiency
• Help maintain newspaper recycling levels in Australia

Taking Action

Action on the environment at News Limited means:

• Tackling electricity consumption from our print centres, the biggest users of energy in our business
• Investing in infrastructure, equipment, processes and attitudes that help reduce our environmental footprint
• Making real changes on bit ticket items - more efficient chillers and air-conditioning, installation of rapid close doors to reduce energy wastage, new printing presses and replacement of high-energy lighting – and smaller changes like encouraging our staff to “power down” their computers at the end of the day
